Frequently Asked Questions about the Punta Arenas-Ushuaia Private Transfer
How long is the transfer between Punta Arenas and Ushuaia?
The journey includes a ferry crossing, a border crossing, long driving sections, and possible technical stops. Ferry lines, strong winds, high-season traffic, border delays, or additional stops may increase the travel time.
For this reason, we recommend planning this transfer as a full travel day and leaving Punta Arenas or Ushuaia early in the morning.
How far is Punta Arenas from Ushuaia by road?
Although the distance may not look extreme on the map, the trip takes a full day because it includes the Strait of Magellan ferry crossing, the Chile-Argentina border, and long road sections across Tierra del Fuego.
How long is the ferry crossing across the Strait of Magellan?
The navigation itself is short, usually around 30 minutes, depending on conditions. However, the full ferry stage may take longer because of vehicle queues, boarding, disembarkation, weather, and ferry traffic on the day of travel.
In very windy weather, the ferry service may be delayed, restricted, or temporarily interrupted.
Is the ferry suitable for passengers who get seasick?
That said, the Strait of Magellan can be windy. If you know you get seasick easily, it is better to bring whatever usually helps you on boat trips.
Is the ferry private?
We plan the route according to the expected ferry schedule, but the ferry itself operates according to weather conditions, traffic, and available space on board.
Can there be delays at the Chile-Argentina border?
On a quiet day, the border formalities may be relatively quick, but in practice it is better to allow around 1 to 2 hours. In high season, or when several buses and private vehicles arrive at the same time, the crossing can take longer.
All passengers must present their documents, and the vehicle must complete the required transport and customs procedures.
What documents do passengers need?
Please check visa requirements in advance if they apply to your group.
Can we bring food with us?
Fresh fruit, meat, dairy products, seeds, plants, and some homemade or unpackaged foods may cause problems during customs or sanitary control. These rules are especially strict when entering Chile, where the SAG agricultural control checks luggage and applies fines for undeclared products. If in doubt, it is better to bring sealed packaged snacks and avoid fresh products.
Are food and drinks provided during the transfer?
Along the way, short stops may be made at a gas station, roadside stop, or small café, where simple snacks and hot drinks are usually available.
If requested in advance, we can also arrange basic lunch boxes and drinks for the road. Lunch box requests should be made at least 72 hours before departure.
Can we stop for lunch on the way?
There are limited food options along the route. Cerro Sombrero has a cafeteria/restobar, and there may be simple roadside options later on the Argentine side.
If you would like to include a proper lunch stop, please request it in advance so we can plan the timing realistically.
What will we see on the way?
On the Chilean side, the route passes through the open landscapes of the Magallanes Region, old estancia areas, and the shores of the Strait of Magellan.
The ferry crossing itself is part of the experience. You may see seabirds, and with luck, sometimes dolphins.
On the Argentine side, the road crosses the open steppe of northern Tierra del Fuego before reaching Río Grande, Tolhuin, Lake Fagnano, Lake Escondido, and the forested mountain landscapes near Garibaldi Pass.
Can we make photo stops?
Possible stops may include the San Gregorio area, Punta Delgada ferry terminal, Bahía Azul, Lake Fagnano, Lake Escondido, or the Garibaldi Pass viewpoint.
On a regular transfer, we keep stops brief to make sure the journey stays comfortable and realistic for one day. If you would like more time for photos, lunch, or stops near the lakes and Garibaldi Pass, we can plan this in advance and adjust the service accordingly.
Can we visit an estancia or add sightseeing on the way?
A direct Punta Arenas to Ushuaia transfer is already a long travel day. Adding an estancia visit, lunch stop, or extended photography stops may require an earlier departure, a different schedule, additional driver time, and a price recalculation.
Can we plan a flight, cruise boarding, or Antarctica briefing on the same day?
The route is long and includes a ferry crossing and an international border, both of which depend on external conditions.
If you need to be in Ushuaia for a cruise or flight, it is better to arrive at least one day before the event.
Where can pickup and drop-off be arranged?
Drop-off can be arranged at a hotel, apartment, port, airport, bus terminal, or another agreed location in Ushuaia or nearby surroundings.
The driver meets you with a sign displaying your name, and after booking we share the driver's contact for direct communication.
Can the transfer include a guide?
This service is not included by default and must be requested separately.
Why choose a private transfer instead of a bus?
You travel only with your own group, with a previously agreed departure time, pickup address, and drop-off address. You do not need to coordinate bus terminals, ferry logistics, border timing, or additional transfers on your own.
This is especially useful for families, groups with luggage, travelers heading to a cruise, or guests who prefer a private route across Patagonia.
What vehicle will I travel in?
How much luggage can I bring?
If you are traveling with extra or oversized luggage - for example expedition gear for Antarctica cruises - let us know when booking so we can plan the right vehicle.
What safety features does the vehicle have?
• Multiple airbags - front, side, curtain and rear-seat.
• ABS, emergency braking assist, stability control and traction control.
• Rear camera, front and rear parking sensors, collision mitigation and lane-change assist.
