Transfer Overview

Travel from Chaitén to Esquel in a private vehicle with a driver, crossing from Chile into Argentina at Futaleufú. We'll collect you from your accommodation, Chaitén port or the local airfield and take you to your hotel in Esquel or Trevelin. You'll travel in a car, minivan or minibus reserved for your group.

The road follows the Carretera Austral south past Lago Yelcho to Villa Santa Lucía, where we turn east toward Futaleufú. After the border crossing, Route 259 takes us through Los Cipreses and Trevelin to Esquel, in Argentina's Chubut Province. The route is about 225 km; allow around six hours for the direct transfer, including border formalities.

You can break up the drive with a photo stop by Lake Yelcho, lunch in Futaleufú or a walk to the Nant y Fall waterfalls after crossing into Argentina. Near Trevelin, we can arrange a winery visit, a tour of Molino Nant Fach or Welsh tea with homemade cakes. The tulip fields are another option during the spring flowering season. We suggest choosing one or two main visits and planning an early departure.

Transfers are available in both directions, and you can also book a shorter journey between Futaleufú, Trevelin and Esquel. Heading to Futaleufú for rafting or fly fishing? We can meet you at Esquel Airport and take you straight to your lodge or rafting camp. Pickup at a lodge or an extension to Esquel Airport can be arranged in advance. For another leg along the Carretera Austral, see our Chaitén to Coyhaique and Balmaceda Airport private transfer.

  • Frequently Asked Questions about the Chaitén - Esquel Private Transfer

How long does the Chaitén to Esquel transfer take?
Allow approximately six hours for the direct transfer, including the border crossing and brief breaks. The route is around 225 km, depending on your pickup and drop-off points.
Road conditions, roadworks, weather and queues at the border can affect arrival. A waterfall walk, winery lunch, museum visit or another longer stop will extend the day, so please tell us what you'd like to include before booking.
Is the road paved, and can we travel in winter?
The journey includes paved and gravel sections and requires no ferry crossing. Futaleufú is a low-altitude border crossing; road conditions, weather and opening hours matter more here than elevation.
Winter transfers can be arranged when the road and border conditions allow. Snow, ice or heavy rain may slow the drive, and some visits may not be possible.
Even in summer, keep a warm layer and waterproof jacket within reach. Bring sunscreen and closed shoes with good grip if you plan to walk, particularly at the waterfalls.
What time should we leave, and how long does the border crossing take?
We recommend a morning departure, especially if you'd like to stop along the way. The Futaleufú crossing is not open around the clock, and waiting times vary. We check the current opening hours and allow a margin before closing.
Your pickup time is always given in the local time at your departure point. We account for any time difference between Chile and Argentina.
The visits near Trevelin come after the border crossing when traveling from Chaitén. In the opposite direction, they come before it, so we plan them around the border's opening hours. Each passenger needs the travel documents required to enter the destination country.
Can you collect us after a flight or ferry, or from Pumalín National Park?
Yes. We can meet you at Nuevo Chaitén Airfield (WCH) or Chaitén port, provided your arrival leaves enough time for the drive and border crossing. The airfield is outside town, so pickup there adds to the road journey. Send us your flight or ferry details before booking.
Caleta Gonzalo is a different ferry landing, north of Chaitén. Pickup there, or at accommodation in Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park, adds driving time. Please send your ferry ticket or your lodge's exact location so we can confirm the meeting point and road access.
If you'd like a walk in Pumalín before leaving for Argentina, tell us in advance. A late arrival or transport delay may mean staying overnight before continuing.
Do you offer transfers from Esquel to Chaitén and shorter journeys from Futaleufú?
Yes. You can book the full journey from Esquel or Trevelin to Chaitén, or a shorter transfer between Futaleufú, Trevelin and Esquel. We can collect you at your hotel, a lodge or another agreed address.
Pickup at Esquel Airport is also possible if your flight arrives early enough to collect your bags, reach the border before it closes and continue to your destination. After a late arrival, we recommend staying overnight in Esquel or Trevelin and leaving for Chile the next morning.
Can you take us to Esquel Airport for a flight?
Yes, we can finish the transfer at Esquel Airport (EQS). Send us your flight number and departure time before booking.
For a morning or daytime flight, we recommend arriving in Esquel the day before. A late flight or private charter may work with a same-day transfer, but we need to assess the timing and keep the journey direct.
The same care is needed when traveling toward Chaitén for a departing ferry or flight. Road and border delays make tight connections difficult to plan.
Where can we stop for photos or a short walk?
On the Chilean side, we can plan brief stops around Lake Yelcho and the Yelcho River, as well as a break in Futaleufú for a stroll or lunch. Your driver can stop where there is a safe place to pull over.
After the border, the Nant y Fall waterfalls are a good option for a forest walk. A path of about 400 meters links the waterfall viewpoints, with uneven ground and some slopes.
The waterfalls require a detour from Route 259. Allow around two additional hours for the whole stop, including the access road, entry, the walk and time for photos. Tell us about any mobility needs so we can help you choose a suitable stop.
Can we visit a winery and have lunch there?
Yes. We can arrange a visit to Viñas del Nant y Fall on the Argentine part of the route. The Trevelin valley produces cool-climate wines, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
A visit can include a tasting, and we can check whether lunch is available on your date. Both need to be planned around your arrival and the winery's opening times. Wine tastings and meals are charged separately unless included in your quote.
Can we visit the mill museum or have Welsh tea in Trevelin?
Molino Nant Fach is a working flour mill and museum devoted to the valley's Welsh farming heritage. A guided visit introduces the mill machinery and everyday objects used by the early settlers. Allow around two hours for the stop, including any wait for the next tour.
Trevelin is also a good place for a walk and Welsh tea. Tea rooms serve homemade bread, scones, cakes and the traditional dark fruit cake known as torta negra. We check opening hours before adding a visit.
If you're staying in Trevelin, we can take you directly to your accommodation and finish the transfer there.
Can we visit the tulip fields near Trevelin?
Yes, during the flowering season, usually in October and early November. Campo de Tulipanes is near Route 259 and can be included if your travel dates and the day's schedule allow.
We check the season's opening dates and flowering conditions before confirming a visit. The fields do not look the same throughout the season, and blooms are not guaranteed for every spring departure.
How many stops can we combine in one day?
We suggest one or two main visits, depending on your departure time and the border schedule. A waterfall walk and lunch at the winery, or the mill and Welsh tea, are possible combinations to discuss when booking.
Trying to fit in every attraction along the Ruta Galesa makes the day too full. An overnight stay in Trevelin or Esquel gives you time to explore the rest the following day.
We also recommend keeping La Trochita for a separate day. The heritage steam train runs to a timetable, and the Esquel excursion takes around three hours.
Can we finish near Los Alerces or continue to El Bolsón or Bariloche?
Yes. If you're staying at a lodge near Los Alerces National Park, we can quote a transfer directly there instead of taking you into Esquel. Please send the property's exact location.
A visit to the park is a separate addition, with extra driving and time on the trails. We usually allow an extra half day for this, depending on the area you'd like to visit.
We can also quote onward travel north to El Bolsón or Bariloche. This makes the journey considerably longer, so an overnight stay in Esquel followed by travel the next morning is often the more comfortable plan.
What vehicle will we travel in, and can we bring fishing or sports equipment?
We choose a car, minivan or minibus according to your group size and luggage. Tell us how many suitcases you'll have, their approximate sizes and the length of any fishing rod cases.
Bicycles, kayaks and other large items need to be agreed in advance. Send dimensions, quantities and, if possible, photos so we can confirm whether a suitable vehicle, rack or trailer is available.
Please also tell us about any mobility needs and give the ages, heights and weights of children so we can confirm suitable child seats before booking.
How much does the transfer cost, and how do we book?
The price depends on your travel date, pickup and drop-off points, group size, luggage and planned visits. Send us these details, along with any flight or ferry information and the stops that interest you. We'll check availability, work out the timing and send a quote for your trip. A guide can be added for the day on request.
Drinking water is provided. We can plan a lunch stop, but meals are separate unless included in your quote. A small snack to eat before the border crossing is useful, especially when traveling with children.
