Transfer Overview
We'll meet you at Balmaceda Airport (BBA) or your accommodation in Coyhaique for a private transfer to Chaitén along the Carretera Austral. You'll have a minivan or minibus just for your group, with room for your luggage. We also arrange transfers from Chaitén to Coyhaique or Balmaceda Airport. Allow approximately 9-10 hours from Balmaceda Airport, or around 8 hours from Coyhaique.
The route passes through Villa Mañihuales and Villa Amengual, then continues through the Queulat area to Puyuhuapi, La Junta and Villa Santa Lucía. Forests, rivers and mountain scenery fill much of the drive, with views of the fjord around Puyuhuapi.
It's a long day on the road, so we can plan a few breaks along the way: lunch in Puyuhuapi, a short forest walk in Queulat National Park or a soak at Termas del Ventisquero. With enough time, you can also walk to Laguna Témpanos and take a boat trip for views of the hanging glacier. If you'd like to spend longer in the park and visit the hot springs, an overnight stay in Puyuhuapi gives you more time for both.
Shorter transfers to villages and lodges along the route are available, as are extensions to Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park and Caleta Gonzalo, north of Chaitén. Continuing south after Coyhaique or Balmaceda? See our Balmaceda Airport to Puerto Río Tranquilo private transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Balmaceda / Coyhaique - Chaitén Private Transfer
How do we get from Balmaceda or Coyhaique to Chaitén, and how long does it take?
These are estimates for a direct transfer. Lunch, walks, boat trips and hot springs visits add time. Roadworks, weather and the condition of the road can also affect the journey, so arrival times are approximate.
Is there a bus from Coyhaique to Chaitén?
A private transfer meets you at the airport or your hotel, leaves when it suits you and lets you stop for lunch, photos, Queulat or the hot springs on the way.
Is the road paved, and are there any ferry crossings?
In winter, heavy rain, sleet and ice can make the drive slower, while some trails and visitor facilities may be closed. We allow more time when planning winter transfers and check conditions before departure.
Can you meet us after a flight or ferry arrival?
We can also collect you at Chaitén airfield, Chaitén port or the ferry landing at Caleta Gonzalo. Please send your flight or ferry details, including the arrival point and time. Chaitén and Caleta Gonzalo are different pickup locations, and regional flights and ferries can be affected by weather.
Do you offer transfers from Chaitén to Coyhaique or Balmaceda Airport?
If you have a flight from Balmaceda, we recommend reaching Coyhaique or the airport the day before. It's a long drive, and a delay on the road can leave little room to recover lost time. For a late flight or a private charter, we'll assess the departure time individually and keep the journey direct, without lengthy park visits or a boat trip. If you're traveling north to catch a flight from Chaitén, we also recommend arriving the day before.
Can we start or finish at a lodge or another point along the route?
For Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa, we take you to the roadside landing, where you board the lodge's boat. On departure, your driver meets you when the boat returns. We coordinate the road transfer with the lodge's crossing times.
We can also start or finish in Pumalín National Park or Caleta Gonzalo. If you're arriving from Balmaceda or Coyhaique, leave any longer walks in Pumalín for the following day.
Where can we stop for lunch, photos or a short walk?
Lake Risopatrón, the surroundings of Puyuhuapi and the Cuesta Queulat mountain section offer places for photos where it's safe to pull over. A forest walk in Queulat needs a little more time and should be planned ahead.
In Chaitén, we can also look into a visit to the Museo de Sitio in Manzana 8, the block of houses left half-buried by ash, which tells the story of the 2008 volcanic eruption and its impact on the town. This depends on your arrival time and the museum's opening hours.
Can we visit Queulat National Park during the transfer?
If you're arriving by plane, an early flight alone doesn't guarantee enough time: baggage collection, travel time and the park's last admission all matter. We check the opening hours and which trails are accessible before planning the stop.
For a longer hike, we suggest staying overnight in Puyuhuapi. A forest walk also gives birdwatchers time to listen and look for local birds, though wildlife sightings can't be promised. Park tickets are separate from the transfer and should be arranged in advance.
Can we take a boat trip on Laguna Témpanos to see the hanging glacier?
From the water, you look up toward Ventisquero Colgante and the waterfalls below it. The glacier hangs high above the lagoon; the boat does not take you alongside a wall of ice.
We don't recommend adding this visit when you have a flight to catch later that day.
Are there hot springs along the way?
We'll check the available visiting times and plan the stop in advance. Entry is charged separately. Bring swimwear and a towel.
Would you recommend splitting the journey over two days?
On the first day, travel from Balmaceda or Coyhaique to Puyuhuapi, with time for lunch and the hot springs if your arrival allows. Stay overnight, then visit Queulat the following morning before continuing to Chaitén.
This gives you room for a longer walk or the Laguna Témpanos boat trip. It also works well if a full day in the vehicle feels too tiring.
How do you choose a vehicle for our group and luggage?
Tell us the children's ages and any mobility needs so we can plan suitable breaks and walks. With young children, we suggest keeping the day simple, with a proper lunch break and one short nature stop.
What should we bring, and will we have mobile reception?
Mobile coverage is patchy between towns, so please agree on meeting details with us before traveling and don't rely on continuous internet access during the drive.
How much does the transfer cost, and how do we book?
We'll work out the timing, choose a suitable vehicle and send you a quote. A guide can be added for a park visit or the full journey on request.
