Transfer Overview

Start your visit to Chile's Marble Caves with a private transfer from Balmaceda Airport (BBA) to Puerto Río Tranquilo. We meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel, lodge or another agreed address in a private car, minivan or minibus with a professional driver. Pickups in Coyhaique and transfers in the opposite direction are also available.

The route stays entirely within Chile and follows the Carretera Austral through Cerro Castillo National Park, Villa Cerro Castillo and the Murta River valley to Lake General Carrera. It is around 190-200 km from Balmaceda Airport, or 215-220 km from Coyhaique; allow approximately 4-5 hours for the direct journey, excluding stops and road closures.

Mountains and forests give way to river valleys and broad views of the lake. Puerto Río Tranquilo stands on its western shore and is the departure point for boat trips to the Marble Caves, Marble Cathedral and Marble Chapels, known locally as Cavernas, Catedral and Capillas de Mármol.

You can book a direct transfer or add photo stops, a short walk, a museum and rock art visit, wildlife watching or lunch. We plan these around your interests, arrival time, the season and roadworks. If you are hiking in Cerro Castillo, we can take you there first and arrange the onward transfer for another date. Boat and kayak excursions to the Marble Caves are arranged separately. • Frequently Asked Questions about the Balmaceda Airport - Puerto Río Tranquilo Private Transfer

How do we get from Balmaceda Airport to Puerto Río Tranquilo, and how long does it take?
From Balmaceda Airport, we join the Carretera Austral and travel south through Cerro Castillo National Park and Villa Cerro Castillo, then continue through the Murta River valley to Puerto Río Tranquilo on Lake General Carrera. You do not need to go through Coyhaique on the way.
The route is approximately 190-200 km from the airport, or 215-220 km from Coyhaique. Allow approximately 4-5 hours for the direct airport transfer, excluding sightseeing stops and delays caused by road closures.
The road from Balmaceda Airport to Cerro Castillo National Park is paved. South of Villa Cerro Castillo there are some paved stretches, but much of the remaining journey is on gravel, with uneven surfaces, loose stones and, in dry weather, a lot of dust from oncoming trucks. Around 200 km here does not mean a quick highway journey.
Is there a bus from Balmaceda Airport to Puerto Río Tranquilo?
Not directly. Buses to Puerto Río Tranquilo leave from the bus terminal in Coyhaique, with a few departures a day, and take around 4.5 hours. From Balmaceda Airport, you first need to get to Coyhaique, about an hour away, and the bus schedule is not linked to flight times.
Rental cars at Balmaceda Airport can be hard to book in summer, and much of the road south of Villa Cerro Castillo is gravel. A private transfer meets you at arrivals and takes you straight to your accommodation in Puerto Río Tranquilo, with stops planned around your interests and the roadworks.
How do roadworks and road closures affect the transfer?
Roadworks on the southern Carretera Austral can close certain sections for several hours at a time. Paving work is under way between the Bahía Murta access road and Puente El Belga, on the route to Puerto Río Tranquilo, and can affect travel in both directions.
We check the current access arrangements before every transfer and set your pickup time, stops and estimated arrival around the restrictions in force. A long stop just before a scheduled closure can mean several extra hours of waiting, so we plan lunch and other breaks with this in mind.
Do you offer transfers from Puerto Río Tranquilo to Balmaceda Airport or Coyhaique?
Yes. We can pick you up at your accommodation in Puerto Río Tranquilo and take you to Balmaceda Airport or Coyhaique. Send us your flight details before booking so we can plan the departure around your flight and any road closures.
Coyhaique can also be the starting point: if you are staying in the city, we collect you from your hotel or lodge. If you would like to stop in Coyhaique after landing for shopping, lunch or to meet other members of your group, we can arrange this in advance. On the return journey, Coyhaique is a convenient place to stay overnight before a morning flight.
Is the Marble Caves boat trip included?
No. The standard service is a road transfer to your accommodation in Puerto Río Tranquilo. Reaching the Marble Caves requires a separate boat or kayak excursion on the lake, which we can arrange if you would like.
A standard boat trip usually takes around 1.5 hours; a private option including Puerto Sánchez takes approximately 2.5 hours. For a kayaking outing from Bahía Mansa, allow at least three hours, including preparation and a safety briefing. Booking a private road transfer does not automatically make the lake excursion private.
For photography, we suggest staying overnight and booking a private early-morning boat trip, which allows more time and freedom to choose your angles. We cannot guarantee a particular water color, a mirror-smooth surface or sunlight reaching inside the caves.
Can we see the Marble Caves on the day we travel?
If your flight arrives early enough, or you have spent the night in Coyhaique, an afternoon or evening boat trip may be possible. It depends on a smooth journey, the road conditions and the weather, and the departure must be confirmed in advance. Whether boats can leave depends on the wind, waves, the operator's schedule and authorization from the local authorities.
If the caves are your main reason for visiting, allow time to see them the following day as well. Two nights in Puerto Río Tranquilo do not guarantee a boat trip, but give you more flexibility in Patagonia's changeable weather.
On your departure day, we do not recommend combining a morning boat trip with the transfer to the airport. A delayed departure, stronger winds or a closed section of the Carretera Austral could leave too little time before your flight. Visit the caves the day before, or stay overnight in Coyhaique before a morning flight.
Where can we stop for photos or a short walk?
Near Cuesta del Diablo, there are views of the winding mountain road and the valley below. Around Villa Cerro Castillo, you can photograph the jagged peaks that gave the village and national park their name. Farther along are Laguna Verde, the Río Ibáñez valley and Bosque Muerto, a landscape of standing dead trees, and the final stretch brings views across the Murta lowlands and Lake General Carrera.
For a short walk, we can consider Laguna Chiguay in Cerro Castillo National Park when access is open; allow around half an hour for a break here. The full Laguna Chiguay trail takes about two hours and can be planned as part of an extended transfer. A walk through Villa Cerro Castillo or along the waterfront in Bahía Murta is another option.
We stop only where there is a safe pull-off or permitted parking. If photography is a priority, allow more time for the drive.
Where can we stop for lunch?
Villa Cerro Castillo is the most convenient place for lunch on the main route, with restaurants such as Hostería Villarrica and La Querencia. We choose the restaurant after checking availability and the menu.
Allow around 1.5 hours for a full lunch stop. Meals are paid separately unless included in your quote, and we plan lunch around the driving schedule and any road closures.
What can we add to the transfer when traveling with children?
For families curious about the area's history, the Museo Escuela Cerro Castillo is a good option. Housed in a former rural school, it introduces the area's history, archaeology and early settlers. A short walk away, the Paredón de las Manos rock face bears ancient handprints, a good way to talk with children about the people who lived in Patagonia long ago. Allow 1-1.5 hours for both.
After a flight, one main stop usually works best. Please tell us the children's ages so we can arrange suitable child seats. Children's participation in a Marble Caves boat trip must be confirmed separately, depending on their ages, the boat and local safety rules.
Will we see wildlife on the way?
The route passes through Cerro Castillo National Park, an important habitat for the huemul, Chile's rare South Andean deer. Deer are sometimes seen at the forest edge or close to the road, but sightings cannot be guaranteed. When there is a safe place to stop, we can take time to watch; we keep our distance and never approach or feed them.
The park is also home to Andean condors, Magellanic woodpeckers and other Patagonian forest birds. If wildlife or birdwatching is a main interest, tell us when you inquire: a separate outing with a local naturalist or ornithologist allows much more time than an airport transfer. Bring your own binoculars and a telephoto lens.
Can we stop in Cerro Castillo to hike, or start from Queulat or Puerto Chacabuco?
Yes. Villa Cerro Castillo lies directly on the route, so we can drop you there for a few nights of hiking and arrange the onward transfer to Puerto Río Tranquilo as a separate leg. If you need a drop-off at a particular trailhead, tell us the name of the trail.
We can also arrange a transfer from the Ventisquero Colgante area in Queulat National Park, a drive of approximately 7-9 hours, or from Puerto Chacabuco, around 290 km and 5-6 hours. In both cases, plan an overnight stay and visit the caves the following day. A Marble Caves visit is not a practical shore excursion during a single-day cruise call at Puerto Chacabuco.
Can we continue to Chile Chico, Argentina or Caleta Tortel?
Yes. From Puerto Río Tranquilo, we can arrange a separate private transfer via Chile Chico to Los Antiguos in Argentina. Another route to the lake's southern shore is the ferry from Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez to Chile Chico, which we can combine with a transfer from Balmaceda or Coyhaique; it does not take you to the Marble Caves.
Caleta Tortel is a substantially longer journey via Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane: allow around ten hours of driving from Balmaceda Airport. We recommend an overnight stop in Puerto Río Tranquilo rather than adding a boat trip to a one-day drive.
Balmaceda Airport has nonstop flights to Santiago and Puerto Montt, a limited weekly service to Punta Arenas and, from January to March 2027, a seasonal SKY route via Temuco. Flights to Argentina usually connect via Santiago.
Will a guide accompany us, and how do we book?
The standard transfer includes a private vehicle and professional driver. If you would like to turn the drive into a sightseeing day, we can arrange a local guide or a specialist for birdwatching or local history, agreeing on the language and stops in advance.
To book, send us your travel date, flight details, number of passengers, pickup and drop-off locations, luggage information and any stops you would like to include. We will confirm availability, the estimated timing and the price for your trip.
