Tour Overview:

This private shore excursion from San Antonio is for cruise passengers who would rather spend the call on nature and wine than on a long drive to the city.

The morning starts with birdwatching at the Río Maipo Wetland, where the river meets the Pacific and more than 190 bird species have been recorded, then continues to Hacienda San Juan, a small family winery in the San Antonio Valley, a few kilometers from the ocean.

At the winery you walk through the vineyard and the historic park, and the wine tasting is hosted by the owner, who receives guests personally. The tour starts and ends at the San Antonio cruise terminal, and a longer version adds a traditional Chilean lunch or asado at the estate.

    Itinerary Details:

    Pickup at San Antonio Port

    15 minutes

Your guide and driver meet you at the San Antonio cruise terminal and drive to the Río Maipo Wetland, near the mouth of the Maipo River.

    1

    Río Maipo Wetland

    1.5 hours

The wetland sits where the Maipo River meets the Pacific Ocean, and it is one of the best birdwatching sites on the central coast of Chile: an important habitat for resident and migratory birds, with more than 190 species recorded in the area.
A network of wooden boardwalks crosses the park, with observation platforms, benches and bird hides along the way. The walk passes through reed beds, open water and dunes before reaching the estuary and the Pacific shoreline.
Morning is usually the best time to be here. The birds are more active and the temperature is easier than under the midday sun.
You do not need to be an experienced birdwatcher to enjoy it. The walk is flat and unhurried, with good opportunities for photography and wide views over the wetland and the coast.

    Transfer to Hacienda San Juan

    20 to 30 minutes

From the wetland you continue inland to Hacienda San Juan, a small family winery in the San Antonio Valley.

    2

Hacienda San Juan Winery and wine tasting

    1.5 hours

Hacienda San Juan lies about 5 km from the Pacific, in the San Antonio Valley. The cool coastal air and the steady sea breeze suit varieties such as Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay, and the vineyard is small and worked on organic and biodynamic principles.
You walk through the vineyard and the old park before the tasting. The estate has a history of its own: it is linked to the family of José Manuel Balmaceda, President of Chile from 1886 to 1891, and parts of the old property survive, including the adobe bell tower of the former chapel.
The park was laid out in the late 19th century by the French landscape architect Guillermo Renner, who worked on several parks and gardens in Chile. Among the trees is an old cork oak, rarely seen in this country.
The wine tasting covers the estate's cool-climate wines, produced in small quantities. What makes the visit different is that the owner receives guests personally and talks about the property and the wines himself.

    Return to San Antonio Port

    30 minutes

After the tasting you return to the San Antonio cruise terminal. The full tour takes about five hours, and departure and return times are adjusted to your ship's schedule.

    3

Traditional Chilean lunch or asado at the winery

    2 hours

After the tasting you stay at the estate for a traditional Chilean lunch or asado, served with its own wines.
This version gives you more time at the winery and in the park without adding another major stop to the day.

Optional stop at the Santo Domingo viewpoint

    20 minutes

If the schedule allows, we can add a short stop at Puntilla Santa Isabel in Rocas de Santo Domingo, a viewpoint over the Pacific, the Maipo estuary and the coastline.
This stop depends on your ship's schedule and the time left before returning to port.

    Return to San Antonio Port

    30 minutes

After lunch you return to the San Antonio cruise terminal. This version of the tour takes about seven hours, and departure and return times are adjusted to your ship's schedule.

San Antonio Shore Excursion: Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this shore excursion for?
This tour is a good choice for travelers who enjoy nature, wine and smaller local places. It works especially well for birdwatchers, photographers, wine and food lovers, and anyone who prefers a relaxed pace.

No special level of fitness is required. The birdwatching stop at the wetland follows an easy boardwalk route and does not involve trekking.

It can also be a good option for travelers who have already visited Chile and would like to see something different from the usual tourist routes.
Does it work for cruise passengers?
Yes. One of the main advantages of this tour is how close both stops are to the port of San Antonio.

You do not need to travel all the way to Santiago or Valparaíso to have an interesting day ashore. Within a short drive of the cruise terminal, you can visit the Río Maipo Wetland, see the Pacific coast and enjoy a wine tasting at Hacienda San Juan in the San Antonio Valley.

The itinerary is adjusted to your ship's schedule.

Ship - excursion - ship. A good option for a port call or an overnight stay. We meet you at the cruise terminal and return you to the port with enough time before departure.

Ship - excursion - Santiago or Valparaíso. A good option for disembarkation day. After the wetland and winery visit, we can continue to Santiago, Valparaíso, your hotel or the airport.

Santiago - excursion - embarkation. If you are starting your cruise in San Antonio, we can pick you up in Santiago, visit the wetland and winery on the way, and then take you to the cruise terminal in time for boarding.
In what order do we visit the stops?
We usually recommend visiting the wetland first and the winery second.

Birds are generally more active in the morning, and the wetland is also more comfortable before the stronger midday sun. After that, you can continue to the winery for the visit, the wine tasting and, if included, lunch.

The route can also be done in reverse. The final order depends on your ship's schedule, the winery's opening hours and the tour format you choose.
