San Pedro de Atacama - Uyuni
Transfer Overview
A private transfer from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni takes you from northern Chile into Bolivia in one full day. You can book a direct transfer or include a few short photo stops along the way. The aim is to reach Uyuni before dark. This is a transport service rather than a tour of Bolivia's lagoons or a multi-day trip through southwestern Bolivia with an overnight stay in the desert. The transfer is also available in the opposite direction, from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama.
Allow around 10–12 hours for a direct transfer, including border formalities, or roughly 13 hours with photo stops. Travel times are approximate and depend on the route, road conditions, weather and how long it takes to clear the border. Transfers can be arranged year-round, provided the border crossing is open and road and weather conditions allow.
There are two main routes: via Calama and Ollagüe, or via Hito Cajón and the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve. Both cross remote, high-altitude areas, but they differ considerably in driving conditions, scenery and how reliably the journey can be completed in one day. The route depends on which border crossings are open and on road and weather conditions.
Route via Calama and Ollagüe
This is generally the more predictable route for reaching Uyuni by evening. From San Pedro de Atacama, we head toward Calama, then continue north through the high desert to the Ollagüe border crossing. After completing Chilean and Bolivian border formalities, the journey continues directly toward Uyuni.
The scenery is less dramatic than on the Hito Cajón route, but there is still plenty to see from the vehicle: the desert between San Pedro and Calama, volcanic ridges, the salt flats around Ascotán and views of Ollagüe volcano.
We allow for short rest stops and, if time permits, a few stops for photos. We choose photo stops on the day, wherever there is a safe place to pull over, a good view and enough time to stay on schedule.
This route works well if you have plans for the following day: a visit to the Uyuni salt flats (Salar de Uyuni) or the village of Tomave, a flight to La Paz, an onward train or bus, or an overland journey through Bolivia via Potosí. It gives you a chance to see the landscape change from the Atacama Desert to the Bolivian Altiplano while keeping the focus on reaching Uyuni the same day.
Route via Hito Cajón
The route via Hito Cajón is more scenic and more demanding. It crosses the border near the Licancabur and Juriques volcanoes, then continues through the southern Bolivian Altiplano, the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve and the Siloli Desert.
Brief photo stops may be possible at Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, with views of Licancabur and other volcanic and high-altitude landscapes along the way. Stops must be directly on the route and kept short enough to reach Uyuni in daylight.
Completing this journey in one day requires an early departure, reliable transport and careful coordination with the transfer service on the Bolivian side. The route is particularly sensitive to weather, road conditions, seasonal changes and delays at the border.
Walks, hikes, a soak in the Polques hot springs, and longer visits to Sol de Mañana, Laguna Colorada, Árbol de Piedra or the Siloli Desert need more time than this transfer allows. Driving through the reserve with brief photo stops is very different from spending time exploring its main sights.
This route is generally more suitable during the dry season. There also needs to be enough daylight for the full journey. Rain or strong winds can slow the drive and make arrival times harder to predict.
