Transfer Overview

A private transfer from Antofagasta to San Pedro de Atacama can be arranged from Andrés Sabella Airport, from a hotel in Antofagasta, or after a short stay on the Pacific coast.

This route is also useful for travelers arriving in northern Chile directly from other South American countries. Antofagasta Airport has international connections on some dates, including flights from Lima and Cali. If your itinerary includes Peru or Colombia, flying into Antofagasta can sometimes be more practical than connecting through Santiago before continuing north. We check the current flight schedule and availability for your travel dates before confirming the service.

The transfer leaves the coast and continues inland through the Atacama Desert to San Pedro de Atacama. It can be booked as a direct airport or hotel transfer, or as part of a longer itinerary combining Antofagasta and the desert.

  • Frequently Asked Questions about the Antofagasta - San Pedro de Atacama Private Transfer

How far is it from Antofagasta to San Pedro de Atacama, and how long does the drive take?
The distance is approximately 310–330 km, depending on the starting point and the route. The drive usually takes around 4.5–5 hours without stops. Actual travel time may vary due to road conditions, weather and traffic.
The route starts on the Pacific coast and heads inland into the Atacama Desert. It follows the main highways of the Antofagasta Region, including sections of Ruta 5, the Chilean part of the Pan-American Highway, Ruta 25 toward Calama and then Ruta 23-CH to San Pedro de Atacama.
This is primarily a private intercity transfer rather than a full sightseeing day. Short stops can be added in advance, or the transfer can be arranged as a longer scenic route with several visits along the way.
What stops can be added along the way?
If the transfer starts at Andrés Sabella Airport, two easy stops are Hito al Trópico de Capricornio and La Portada.
Hito al Trópico de Capricornio marks the Tropic of Capricorn and makes a simple photo stop shortly after leaving the airport.
La Portada is one of the best-known natural landmarks near Antofagasta: a large rock arch rising from the Pacific coast below the cliffs. A stop here normally includes the viewpoint and a short walk, without going down to the beach.
If you start from a hotel in Antofagasta, another option is Ruinas de Huanchaca, the remains of a former silver smelting complex and one of the city’s main historic sites.
A longer visit can also be arranged at Salitrera Chacabuco, an abandoned nitrate settlement in the desert. This stop requires considerably more time and is better suited to an early departure.
Can we see all of these places in one day?
The direct transfer takes up to five hours. One or two short stops can easily be added without turning the day into a long excursion.
A few combinations that work well are:
    • Antofagasta Airport – Tropic of Capricorn – La Portada – San Pedro de Atacama
    • Antofagasta city – Ruinas de Huanchaca – La Portada or Tropic of Capricorn – San Pedro de Atacama
    • Antofagasta – Salitrera Chacabuco – San Pedro de Atacama, with an early start
Trying to include La Portada, the Tropic of Capricorn, Huanchaca, Chacabuco, lunch and the full drive to San Pedro on the same day would make the journey unnecessarily long. We normally suggest choosing one or two stops.
    Who usually books this transfer?
This route is often booked by travelers who are combining several countries in one South American itinerary and want to avoid unnecessary domestic flights.
Antofagasta Airport has direct international connections on some dates, including flights from Lima and Cali. This can make Antofagasta a useful entry point for travelers coming from Peru or Colombia before continuing to San Pedro de Atacama.
The route can also be booked in the opposite direction. If your trip continues to Argentina, see our San Pedro de Atacama to Salta private transfer.
Is there anything we should know before the drive?
If sightseeing stops, lunch or longer detours are added, the total travel time increases. These should be arranged in advance so that the day can be planned around daylight, road conditions and your expected arrival time in San Pedro.
The basic transfer price is for a direct journey. Sightseeing stops, guide service, meals, entrance fees, waiting time and route changes are quoted separately.
Will we see Mano del Desierto on the way?
No. Mano del Desierto, the famous sculpture of a giant hand in the desert, is located south of Antofagasta and in the opposite direction from San Pedro de Atacama.
Visiting it during this transfer would require a substantial detour. It is better included in a separate excursion from Antofagasta, ideally the day before, or in an itinerary that already continues south of the city.
The drive takes around five hours. Where can we stop for lunch?
Lunch at a restaurant is not included in the standard transfer.
If you leave Antofagasta in the morning, the easiest option is usually to stop in Calama or have lunch after arriving in San Pedro de Atacama. Calama is directly on the route, so there is no significant detour.
If your flight arrives around lunchtime, or if you plan to visit the Antofagasta coast before leaving the city, lunch can also be arranged in Antofagasta.
For an early departure, a simple snack or lunch box can be arranged in advance if you prefer to continue directly to San Pedro and arrive earlier.
We have never been at altitude before. How high does the road go?
Antofagasta is almost at sea level, and Andrés Sabella Airport is at approximately 140 m.
The road climbs gradually as it heads inland. Calama sits at around 2,300 m, and San Pedro de Atacama at around 2,400 m.
This is noticeable altitude for some travelers, but it is still much lower than places such as El Tatio Geysers, the high-altitude lagoons or the Altiplano routes in Bolivia and Argentina.
It is usually enough to stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol on arrival and not plan a demanding high-altitude excursion immediately after the drive.
Some people may notice mild tiredness, headache, dryness or sleepiness, particularly after a long international flight. Travelers with heart, blood pressure or respiratory conditions, or with a known sensitivity to altitude, should discuss their itinerary with their doctor beforehand.
What is the weather like between Antofagasta and San Pedro de Atacama?
Antofagasta has a mild coastal climate throughout the year. Mornings can be cool, cloudy or windy due to the influence of the Pacific and the Humboldt Current, while afternoons are often sunnier.
The climate changes quickly as the road moves inland. The air becomes much drier, the sun stronger and the temperature difference between day and night more noticeable.
San Pedro de Atacama is usually dry and sunny during the day, but evenings and nights can be cold. It is useful to keep sunglasses, water, a light jacket or fleece and closed shoes with you during the transfer. In winter, bring an additional warm layer for the evening.
Why is Antofagasta Airport considered international? Are there direct flights from other countries?
Andrés Sabella Airport (ANF) handles international as well as domestic flights.
At present, some direct international services operate from Lima, Peru, and Cali, Colombia. This can be useful for itineraries combining Peru or Colombia with northern Chile.
These routes should not be assumed to operate every day. Flight frequency, operating days and schedules may change by season. We therefore check the current airline schedule for your exact travel dates before confirming the transfer.
If you are flying in from Santiago, Calama is the closest airport to San Pedro de Atacama: see our Calama Airport to San Pedro de Atacama private transfer.
Can we visit archaeological sites or see mummies on the way?
    Not on this route.
The famous ancient mummies of northern Chile are mainly associated with the Chinchorro culture around Arica, much farther north from the Antofagasta–San Pedro route.
If archaeology is part of your trip, it is better to plan visits around San Pedro de Atacama itself. Sites such as Pukará de Quitor and Aldea de Tulor are linked to the history of the Atacameño, or Lickanantay, people and can be visited separately from San Pedro.
